C4UNWN Futures Lab

Coalition for the UN We Need — GFF Foresight Workshop

Present-Forward (Dan Perell)

Starting from where we are and building toward the best achievable outcome.

Part 1 (15 min):

Given what exists — Pact for the Future, UN80, Article 109, Declaration on Future Generations, next SG — what is the most ambitious outcome realistically achievable?

Part 2 (15 min):

What does working toward that require? Who needs to move? Where does this approach fall short?

Future-Back (Sofia Garcia)

Starting from the ideal and working backward.

Part 1 (15 min):

Set aside political constraints. What international order does humanity actually need? Who has standing? How does it operate?

Part 2 (15 min):

What would it take to get there? Where are the real pathways? Where does this become naive?

Closing Plenary (15 min)

Report back, surface tensions between the two approaches. The output feeds into UNGA High-Level Week as a vision statement for UN reform.

Article 109

UN Charter amendment pathway — a review conference can be convened by two-thirds GA vote plus any nine Security Council members, with no P5 veto.

Key tensions: "Unrealistic" vs "uninspiring" — the session must avoid seeming too idealistic to civil society while also not being uninspiring. Pathways matter as much as vision (Tim Murithi). Three scenarios: ideal / near-term pathway / disastrous status quo. The output feeds UNGA High-Level Week — this is not just an academic exercise.
